A cinematic journey through the IntAkt archive

In 1975, 50 years ago, an exhibition on contemporary Austrian women artists was held in Vienna on the occasion of the “International Year of Women” proclaimed by the United Nations (UN). It was curated exclusively by men and shown in the Ethnographic Museum (!). Many Austrian women artists protested against this, boycotted the patriarchally dominated art and culture world, organized themselves in a joint revolt and found new media and spaces of their own. A short time later, the protest movement against the Vienna Women's Art Show gave rise to the International Action Group of Women Artists IntAkt, which campaigned for the concerns, rights and visibility of women artists in the cultural sector and still exists today.
The short film program shows films about and by IntAkt artists from the 1970s and 1980s, with archive footage of joint meetings and actions as well as artistic works. It is intended as a recognition of their diverse artistic working methods and at the same time as a tribute to the political and legal struggles for women in the cultural sector on which we build today - above all the IntAkt founder Christa Hauer, who would have been 100 years old in 2025.
