“When the first shots are fired, you will realize that the war started much earlier,” the filmmaker quotes her grandmother. Home videos from the 90s set in dialog with Geert Wilders' election campaign slogans: What does a look back at one's own youth in disintegrating Yugoslavia tell us when this view is shaped from today's Europe?
Out of concern for the place that has now become home, HOME GAME points to parallels in history without suggesting a simplified repetition of things. Filmmaker Lidija Zelovic consistently rejects the simple narrative and traces a life full of upheavals and break-ups. In tracing the detours, one demand remains: With necessary clarity, HOME GAME demands action against the resurgence of nationalism, right-wing ideologies and social division.
